Bamville vs. Stars of the Past

Sunday 15th July 2007 saw a current Bamville team taking on a team of former Bamville players, dubbed "Stars of the Past", as part of their 75th Anniversary celebrations.

On the morning of the game, a former player who couldn't make the game due to being in Australia, Ernie Tyerman, took the time and effort to phone Peter Carr and wish everybody good luck. Thanks Ernie, much appreciated!
Thanks also go to Don Field who supplied both balls and even umpired for us. Don also gave us a selection of old fixture cards. We were amazed at some of the scores in the past (Bamville won one game after batting first and getting 38!).

After a lunch which many players ate and enjoyed, the current side ended up batting.
A wayward opening over from Jack Pollard, who later left his jacket in the pavilion (contact us if you want it back...) gifted the current team 15 runs, mostly in extras. Unfortunately for Jack, his father Malcolm managed to drop 2 catches from his bowling, including one which 2 or 3 other players left for him. Dave Hopkins opened from the other end and caused Pec all sorts of problems, haing him dropped by the 'keeper before eventually getting one to go through the gate and make a mess of the stumps. Geoff Pruden conspired to drop another couple of chances before George Brignall showed us all how it was done with 3 catches. After that everything stuck including Stan Gladwell taking a caught-and-bowled in his 4-for, and Geoff Pruden again tried to assist the batsmen but after 3 attempts the ball stuck in his hands.
After 38.5 overs, the score was 208-8 when the heavens opened. As everybody rushed for cover, the rain got heavier and it was decided to take tea and that the game was now 39 overs per side.

The rain subsided after about 10 minutes and after a quick pitch inspection and a roll to squeeze out some moisture from the pitch, the game restarted.
Jack Pollard starred with the bat, claiming a 50 including 2 big sixes off Nathan Hale's bowling before holing out to mid-on to the same bowler.
Martin Corteel behind the stumps returned the favour from Geoff Pruden by missing 2 stumpings and a run-out before stumping Peter Bedell off a wide.
Some good fielding and tight bowling restricted the Stars of the Past to just 170 runs for the loss of 10 of their 11 wickets from their 39 overs.

Throughout the evening there was a barbeque which was well manned by Paul Arnerich, John Harle and Andrew Cripps and brought in some useful funds for the club to go towards the end-of-season dinner.
Miles' mad dash to a supermarket for emergency rations turned out to be unnecessary but at least it saves another trip to the cash 'n' carry next week.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable day and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves

Anybody who took photographs, please cut them down to usable size and send them to me, or alternatively just hand me a CD with them on next time you're at the club...
